NOTICE
MAY 2008 GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS REGARDING REHEARSALS AND
PERFORMANCES!
Dear Parents, Now that recital time is upon us, there
is a lot of information you will need to be prepared for your child’s
dance recital! I have put all of the notes here as a guide for the
next few weeks. I realize it is a lot of information, but
please read over it and keep as a reference through Recital Day.
Also, I have had a few requests by parents to have their dancer sit with
them in the auditorium. P L E A S E understand
that this is NOT possible. We are under STATE GUIDELINES regarding Fire
Codes. If one student is allowed to do so, others will ask to do so
also. If you have any questions about any of the following
information, please contact us.
Thank You, Marlene and Faculty
GENERAL COSTUME
NOTES:
-
Your child’s name should be
in every costume part and piece, including tights and shoes.
Make certain that any costume adjustments are done now. Please
do not use safety pins to hold straps or elastics, as they can
come undone or
break and cause an injury.
-
Try on the headdress and see how it will
stay best in her hair.
-
Tutus are worn on the
hips, not on the waist.
-
Organdy tutus and sleeves look so
much nicer if they don’t look like you just took them out of the
bag. Some wrinkles will fall out if you put the costume on a
hanger in a steamy place. You may need to use a warm iron, testing first
on an unnoticeable place. Sequins and
plastic will MELT if ironed.
-
Hang costumes on hangers, tutus stay fuller when hung
upside down over a hanger.
-
NO UNDERWEAR -Costumes look best if
panties are not worn under the tights. We really don’t need
to see Minnie Mouse
peeking out of her costume!
-
Cut off any strings; do not pull them.
AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE
-
Do Not enter or exit the auditorium while there are dancers onstage. This is
distracting to the dancers and the audience. Each dance is less the 3 or
4 minutes, and less then a minute in between dances, so as a courtesy
to other patrons, please wait until intermission.
-
Cell phones and pagers are to be OFF or
put in non-audible mode during the performance.
-
NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY: The flash can blind a dancer on stage making it
dangerous for them. It can also disorient and frighten younger dancers. Also, most flashes
only work within a 12 ft. range.
-
NO VIDEOGRAPHY during the
performance. The Academie has paid a fee to ASCAP and BMI to use
music in a public performance. Our agreement does not cover public
video and their fines run up to
$10,000 per song. The theater has numerous steps and could be quite hazardous to
walk around while it is dark. If you wish, you may video during rehearsal,
or purchase a video from the studio.
-
If
you have a baby or toddler, please consider choosing a seat near
the back of the auditorium so that if you need to step out into
the lobby with them, you will not disturb the dancers on
stage or other audience members.
GENERAL RECITAL NOTES – Please Read
-
All students need to come backstage,
using the stage door entrance ONLY, ½ hour before the performance
is to begin. This door is the service door directly next to the
‘Scene Shop Room 167’, at the south end of the PAC. Upon entering,
she will need to check –in with the door chaperones standing at the only
door located to your right, ‘Dressing Room 165’. ONLY students and
chaperones are allowed passage through this door. (Chaperones are
clearly identified with name badges – supplied by the Academie).
The service door area is where you will be able to pick up your child
once the performance concludes. If your child is seated in the
designated balcony area, might I suggest that you tell her to stay
seated until you come to get her/him. All chaperones are to
stay with their group until, all dancers are safely picked up by their
parents.
-
Your child should come already
dressed in the appropriate tights and costume with hair and make-up
already applied. If she has a costume change, you should
have all these costume parts, on a
hanger or in a garment bag ready to change into.
-
She will then be escorted to a
designated place where she will be with all the dancers from her
performing group. Once these students perform, they will return to
their designated spaces, or changed for their next dance number.
At intermission, these students will then sit with the chaperones in the
designated balcony area in the auditorium through to performance
end. Students are not
allowed in any other area of the auditorium during performances.
-
Absolutely NO MEN
backstage at any time!
-
Do Not Visit backstage during
intermission. Student performers are not allowed into the
auditorium at any time, except for when they
are seated with the chaperones in the designated balcony area.
-
NO FOOD, DRINK, GUM OR CANDY
allowed in the auditorium at ANY TIME. The school
district and I have a signed agreement regarding this point. Do not
touch any curtains or stage equipment. No
standing on, or draping of feet over the auditorium chairs.
-
No Jewelry (bracelets, necklaces,
earrings, watches) or
bold fingernail polish, unless it is part of your costume.
-
No glasses are worn during performance.
-
Chaperones, you will want to bring a
blanket for the dancers to sit on backstage. You might also want
to bring a coloring book, board game, deck of cards or books to keep
your dancers occupied for the 40 or so minutes that they are
backstage. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BRING
MARKERS, FOOD, OR DRINKS BACKSTAGE. Any of
these items will ruin your daughter’s costume or someone else’s.
-
Everyone must sit with their
group. No running in the auditorium, stairs, lobby or the
halls. This is a theatre, not a gymnasium. Someone may miss performing,
if they are not where they are supposed to be.
-
Parents, if you are not a chaperone,
please sit and enjoy the show. If your child must completely
change costumes, the chaperones will assist them. If your child
needs you, you will be called for. A list of students with costume
changes will be available to the chaperones. If you wish, you
may contact the chaperone yourself in the next few weeks.
-
Please clean, as best as you can,
all dance shoes for the recital. Tap shoes and Jazz pumps shine up
well with ‘windex’. Pink Leather Ballet slippers ONLY - can be
cleaned with any leather cleaner, if needed. Be sure that
ballet slippers have the elastic sewn
in and that the bows are tucked inside the shoe.
-
Check with your child’s teacher for leg wear
requirements. ‘Theatrical pink tights’ are the standard for all
ballet numbers. ‘Suntan’ colored tights are required for several tap
numbers. If your child has a tap number after her ballet, you may want
to layer the tights (tan under pink) when a quick costume change is
required.
Check with your teacher for her tight requirements.
-
No ‘shiny’ or cerise tights.
-
NO safety pins!
They are very DANGEROUS! All straps, etc. must be sewn.
-
DO NOT leave any costumes at the auditorium on Thursday, May
15th.
STAGE
MAKE UP – Make up is necessary under bright stage lighting!
There are samples of the
colors of make-up at the counter and they will be referred to throughout
this make-up explanation.
For all
girls:
-
Start with a clean face! It’s
a good idea to put moisturizer on before your make up.
-
Apply a base or foundation that closely matches the skin color.
Be sure to blend into the hairline, under chin, down into
neck, and up to the ears. Also cover eyelids and lips.
-
Set the foundation by applying make-up powder in the same
shade as foundation. A small amount of baby powder can substitute.
-
Lightly apply a pink blush on the
cheekbones and be sure to blend well. You may also put a little
blush to your chin and forehead. Apply with a cotton ball for best
results. (Love My Face ‘BARI’ brand, in Luscious Pink #2272 or
Cheekers Blush #110 Classic Pink or #154 Deep Plum) NO
FROSTS!
For girls up to age
7:
-
Lightly
apply a pink lipstick. (Love My Lips in Crème Sheer Delight #436
or Cover Girl Incrediful #928 Fresh Jam, #940 Warm & Rosy or #944
Port Pout) NO FROSTS!
-
Lightly
apply a light blue eye shadow (Love My Eyes in Liv It Up #2334
or Cover Girl #600 Sterling Blue or Maybelline #120 Blue Blazes) to
the eyelid.
-
Apply black or brown mascara to the
upper lashes.
-
If eyebrows are very light, use a
brown powder eye shadow on a Q-tip to darken eyebrows. A pencil creates a fake looking
eyebrow.
For girls age 8 &
over:
-
Line lips
with a pink lip pencil. (Love My Lips in Pink or Wine) Fill them in with
the pencil and blot. Then apply a pink lipstick. (Love My Lips in
Crème Sheer Delight #436 or Cover Girl Incrediful #928 Fresh Jam, #940
Warm & Rosy or #944 Port Pout) NO
FROSTS!
-
Using two
shades of blue eye shadow, (Love My Eyes in Liv It Up #2334 or Cover
Girl #600 Sterling Blue or Maybelline #120 Blue Blazes) apply the
lighter shade over the top section of the eyelid, blending into the
eyebrow. With the darker shade, cover the bottom half of the
eyelid. Then, starting 1/3 of the way from the inner eye, sweep
the darker shade up & over the top section of the eyelid, just past the outer corner of the eye, blending
into the eyebrow. Apply the lighter color again just under the eyebrow.
-
Apply a thin line of brown or black
eyeliner just above the upper lashes, and slightly past the corner of
the eye. Then, starting in the middle of the eye, apply a thin
line underneath the bottom lashes and slightly past the corner of the
eye, but don’t join the lower and upper lines. Also, do not put eyeliner on the inside rim of the eye. It is not
healthy for the eye and it also make the eyes look smaller.
-
Apply black or brown mascara to the upper and lower lashes.
-
If eyebrows are very light, use a
brown powder eye shadow on a Q-tip to darken eyebrows. A pencil creates a fake looking
eyebrow.
If you have similar colors in
your make-up case, please feel free to
substitute.
If you wish, you may purchase this inexpensive
make-up at Wal-Mart. They may have to order more. (Due to
health and sanitation, might I suggest that you do not share make-up, or
if you do, use Q-tips and cotton balls.)
FLOWERS AND
GIFTS
-
Traditionally, flowers
are presented to performers at performance end. We will have
flowers, both silk and live, available for purchase in the ‘Galleria’
area of the auditorium. All receipts, after expenses, are put into
the scholarship fund for students who attend summer intensives.
Single carnations, with
babies breath and bouquets including carnations or roses will also be
available. At this time I am unable to give you an exact
cost. A sheet with the flower costs will be posted at the studio,
as soon as it becomes available.
Please consider purchasing your flowers from the parents
conducting this fundraiser and “Thank You” in
advance.
